The Reading Promise

The Reading Promise is a beautiful story about a mother who doesn't have a lot, but is determined to share her love of reading, books, and knowledge with her son. 

She makes sure that her son never misses an opportunity to learn.

The illustrations by Elisa Moriconi add a really nice soft touch to this book, which makes a great bedtime story.

Although there are a sad moments in this book, it is still a great book.

His mom gets sick and dies when he is a young adult. I feel it is important to mention this as someone who is not ready to talk about this with their young children might want to skip this page for now. They can return to it when they are ready.

Overall, despite the sad moments, I would still give this book

The Book No One Wants to Read by Beth Bacon

I hate to admit that the cover almost stopped me from picking up this book. I know the title alone is meant to be enticing, but I didn't open this book until I saw an author friend post a glowing review about it on Goodreads.

I gave the book a chance and opened it up. It has nice big text in small doses. The book makes a bargain with you. You pretend to read it, and it gets some well-deserved time off the shelf.

You play games with the book, which are fun and keep the reader occupied.

I've never been a reluctant reader myself, but I think this book will help a lot of reluctant readers out there with its wit an humor. They just have to take it off the shelf for a few minutes.

The illustrations were simple and bold. I liked them a lot. They added to the book and fit the theme well.

A personal apology from Teddy O'Malley

Hi everyone, I'd like to personally apologize for how long it's been since Destiny and I have made a post. Those of you who know me personally know that I was in a pretty bad car accident a few months ago. I won't share the details, but it has been a long road to recovery!

Now, I wanted to make a post because it's been a while since Destiny has checked her mail (sorry!), but I will try to review all the books in her inbox. After that, we'll only be accepting picture books and easy readers. Again, I'm sorry! But we would have trouble handling anything else right now.

We'll let you know if and when we start reviewing YA or Middle Grade novels again. But don't worry if you already sent us your book (as of yesterday or earlier today). We will get to it!

Naia The Witch by Carmen Parets Luque

 

Many children will relate to the very spunky Naia. After all, she would rather play pranks than go to school. She uses her spells to play pranks on people, but one day her spell goes horribly wrong and she learns a very important lesson.

 

This book is adorable and Naia is a great character. My only complaint about this book is that it is too short. I would have liked to read a little more about Naia and gotten to know her character a little better. But the overall message is that while it may be fun to play pranks, it will not win you friends. And that school is important.

 

My favorite thing about Naia The Witch is the artwork. The artwork is very fun, and I found Carmen's illustrations fascinating. The text lying over the images gives this the feel of a traditional picture book.

What was the book about?

A young boy named Roy gets in a parachuting accident and becomes stranded on a desert island. While there he meets a creature named Frum who has some wonderful berries. Frum shows him all kinds of neat things. But is it all real?

What was my favorite part?

My favourite part was the end. I was very pleased with the ending. I won't spoil it for you but I will say it left me thinking.

What I like about this book

It's very colourful and it very imaginative. I like how well written it is.

What I don't like about this book

The text on some of the pages was difficult to read. As for the story, I don't have any complaints. I liked it a lot and would read it a hundred more times because...

this book is top shelf!
